Fans Approve Of The “Sonic” Redesign

Following in the wake of the new trailer release the other day, fan response towards the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film seems to have risen in estimation.

Six months ago the film released its first trailer to an incredibly negative vocal response, much of which was due to a character redesign that bared little resemblance to the famed SEGA video game character’s iconic design. Very quickly, the studio and filmmakers caved – saying they would redesign the character and redo the visual effects.

The trailer this week gave us a first look at the redesign in action and audiences have far less issues with it. Trends data provider SEM Rush (via Movieweb) tracked Twitter sentiment surrounding variations of the trailer and the response was overwhelming with 73.68% of all tweets positive when describing Sonic’s new look, with only 6.85% negative. The new trailer for the Jeff Fowler-helmed film also fared better, offering a more family-friendly tone than the first.

Not everyone is happy though. The character’s creator Yuji Naka reportedly still has one key problem with the new movie’s redesign, saying on Twitter: “This is the new trailer with Sonic’s new design. The design is much more Sonic-like now that he’s wearing gloves. However, his eyes still aren’t joined together, as expected. I can’t help but feel weird about that one point. But I’m looking forward to the movie’s release.”

It has also been revealed that Tyson Hesse, an artist who crafted the opening sequence to the celebrated 2017 “Sonic Mania” game, lead the team behind the new look. Hesse tweeted: “Honored to have been brought in to lead the design on the new Movie Sonic. Working with [director Jeff Fowler] and the modelers, riggers, texture/fur artists and animators in LA, London, and Vancouver was a thrill I’ll never forget.”

“Sonic the Hedgehog” opens in cinemas everywhere on February 14th 2020.
