Kit Harington Got Game Of Thrones’ Only 2020 Golden Globe Nomination And Fans Have Jokes

Game of Thrones‘ final Season 8 got a record 32 Emmy nominations, but only one nod for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards — and it was for Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, who basically repeated the same two lines all season. One of them was “I don’t want it.” So, yeah, that’s one of the many jokes now flying across Twitter in the wake of the Golden Globe nominations.

Hey, at least Game of Thrones fans have moved on from anger to the acceptance stage! That’s progress. I’m glad we got here together.

Game of Thrones Kit Harington was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series, and the official GoT account congratulated him. At least a dozen fans replied with this same Jon Snow meme from Season 8:

Kit Harington has been “defiant” in the face of criticism about the final season, but one of the many frustrations of Game of Thrones Season 8 was the sidelining of Jon Snow. So to see him nominated — and the ONLY one nominated — is just strange. Fans brought up how Jon Snow just kept saying he didn’t want the leadership role of king, he just supported “mah queen,” his other repeated line from the 2019 season.

This is not to say that fans blame Kit Harington — it’s not his fault he wasn’t given enough to do — but since he’s now the face of Game of Thrones at the Globes, fans can’t help but point out the surprise.

HBO got 15 Golden Globe nominations, but just the one for Game of Thrones. The show previously earned Best Drama nominations in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2012. However, a nomination is not a win and the only GoT win was back in 2012 when Tyrion Lannister star Peter Dinklage won for Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.

So that’s another thing that’s surprising — that Kit Harington wasn’t just nominated for his role in the final season, he got a Best Actor nomination, not supporting. His role was tiny and in the worst season. That “I don’t want it” meme is probably right, to be honest.

When Variety posted about Game of Thrones only getting one nomination this year, the jokes thundered in faster than Dany torching King’s Landing:

In the Best Actor In A Drama Series category, Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington was nominated alongside Brian Cox of HBO’s Succession, Rami Malek of Mr. Robot, Tobias Menzies of The Crown, and Billy Porter of Pose. Some GoT fans were happy for Kit Harington, knowing how hard he worked, while others couldn’t help but bring up his co-stars, like Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, who worked equally hard and was ignored in the Best Actress In A Drama Series category.

Instead, for Best Actress in a TV Drama, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are nominated for Apple’s The Morning Show, with Olivia Colman nominated for The Crown, Nicole Kidman nominated for Big Little Lies, and Jodie Comer nominated for Killing Eve.

The Emmys are more prestigious for TV than the Golden Globes, and the Oscars are much more prestigious for film than the Golden Globes. The Golden Globe Awards is just a fun show to watch ’cause celebs get drunk and silly. It’s loose but you can’t take it too seriously. So it’s good that most Game of Thrones fans are just laughing and cracking jokes about the one nomination. Like the “don’t want it” joke, over and over….

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 5. I have no doubt host Ricky Gervais will poke fun at Game of Thrones, but there are plenty of other topics for him to cover too. Keep up with everything premiering in early 2020 with our handy TV schedule.
